St. Paul CME

Josie Armstrong

Josie Clayton Armstrong was born on April 1, 1908 to Charles and Amanda Dickson Clayton.  She married Charlie B. Armstrong and together they raised their family at St. Paul.  Sister Armstrong served as a Stewardess at St. Paul and her husband served as a Steward and Trustee.  Their son and grandson are currently the Chairman of the Steward Board and Trustee Board.  The annex at St. Paul was dedicated in her memory, because she wanted so badly for St. Paul to have an annex.  Sister Armstrong died on June 30, 1988 and is buried in the SW quadrant of the cemetery.  (See Deceased Members page)

Effie Youngblood Chatman

Sister Effie Chatman was born on April 22, 1898 to Mr. Ferdinand Youngblood and his wife Francis. Sister Youngblood married Holsey Chatman and raised a family. All of their children were raised at St. Paul and were actives in various ways. Sister Madie Chatman Jackson was a longtime usher and Stewardess until her health failed. Brother Achristopher Chatman also was active at St. Paul throughout his lifetime and his children carried this legacy forward. Another son Livingston Chatman who lives in Lakeland, FL has a longtime record of traveling from Florida annually to attend Homecoming Services and other events. After Brother Holsey's death in 1952, she married Mr. Macon Chatman who was also a member of St. Paul. She served for many years as a Sunday School teacher for they young people and Stewardess. Many of her students remember her for giving the young people peppermint candy each Sunday and if she was out of candy, she gave each student a dime. Sister Chatman was the granddaughter of Julia Lewis Dickson, an orignal trustee of St. Paul. Sister Chatman passed on February 16, 1969. (See Deceased Members page)

Tweetie Mae Chatman

Sis Tweetie Mae Chatman was a member of St. Paul for many years and was married to Brother Johnny Chatman.  They raised their daughter Mary Lillian at St. Paul.  Sister  Chatman served as an Usher until her health failed. 

Julia Dickson

Julia Francis Lewis Dickson was one of the original trustees of St Paul Church.  Her descendants and members of her family have held significant roles at St. Paul since.  Some of her direct descendants at St. Paul have included Effie Chatman (Sunday School Teacher), Madie Jackson (Usher), Johnny Youngblood (Sunday School Teacher, Trustee, Steward), Agatha Chappel (Usher), Alma Armstrong, James Clayton, Jr (Steward, Trustee), Francis Y. Dixon (Choir, Stewardess) and many others.

Amanda Dickson

There have been at least two people associated with St. Paul with the name Amanda Dickson.  The two Amanda Dicksons were cousins.  The best known was the daughter of David Dickson and Julia Dickson.  David Dickson sold the land on which the church stands and Julia Dickson was an original trustee.  There is no record this Amanda was ever a member of St. Paul.   The second Amanda Dickson was the granddaughter of John C. Lewis who was the brother of Julia Lewis Dickson.  This Amanda Dickson married Charles Clayton and was the mother of seven children including Josie Clayton Armstrong, Annie Mae Clayton Chatman and  Mabel Clayton Smalley.  She raised her family at St. Paul and two of her children served as Stewardesses.

Tena Cheely

Tena Hunt Cheely was born to Mariah Hunt and Sidney Lewis.  She was the great-grandniece of founding trustee Julia Francis Lewis Dickson.  She was married to William Cheely and they raised their son Mercer and daughter Elizabeth "Lump" Cheely Howard.


Madie Jackson

Sister Madie Chatman Jackson was born on October 26, 1919 to Mr. & Mrs. Holsey and  Effie Chatman and married Mr. Oscar Jackson from St. James CME.  They had four children German, Robert, Josephine and Effie.  Sister Jackson and her husband also raised her sister's children as her own.  These were Sam, Wanda and Horace Berry, Jr.and Ralph and Mary Lewis.  Sister Jackson was always active at St. Paul and always had any children in her household at Sunday School.  Sister Jackson was an active member of the Usher Board.  Sister Jackson also took care of her son after he became disabled.  She died on July 19, 2001.

Bessie Lee Pinkston

Sister Bessie Lee Pinkston was born on June 12, 1923 and died on November 22, 1995.  She was married to Brother Charlie Pinkston and raised their four sons Freddie B, Marvin, Larry and Dwayne at St. Paul.  Sister Pinkston and her husband also raised their nephew "Deacon".  Sister Pinkston served as a Stewardess and was known for her smile and friendly personality.

Carrie Washington

Sister Carrie Macklin Washington at age 94 is currently the oldest living female member of St. Paul CME.  She was married to Mr. Robert "Rob" Washington and had one son.  She also raised a relative Gwendolyn Washington as her daughter.  Sister Washington has deep family roots at St. Paul with many generations of her family as members.

Miller Clayton

Brother Miller Clayton is the son of Mr. Arthur Clayton, Sr and Mrs. Irmine Reese Clayton.  Brother Clayton married Sister Magnolia Reese  Clayton and had a family of five, Carlton, Calvin, Daniel, Barbara Jean and Randolph.  Brother Clayton has served in many positions at St. Paul including Sunday School Teacher, Steward, Trustee, Secretary, Lay Leader and member of the Missionary Society.  Brother Clayton is a retired school teacher and taught for awhile at the school held on the grounds of St. Paul in the Masonic Hall.

Napolean Howard

Brother Napolean Howard was born in 1912 to Mr. Charles W. Howard and his wife Julia M. Howard.  Brother Howard's wife was Sister Rosa Eva Lawson Howard.  Brother Howard died in 1990.  He was a long time member of St. Paul and served as Chairman of the Steward Board.   The oral history at St. Paul was that his father "Charlie" Howard helped to build the current sanctuary. 


Irene Cumming

Irene Cumming was the step granddaughter of Gilbert Castleberry, a founder of St. Paul. She was married to Boysie Cummings and was an active and faithful member of St. Paul.  She was born April 17, 1917 and died November 14, 2000.

Hattie Gibson

Hattie Chapman Gibson was born May 5, 1915 and died January 2, 2003.

Udell Williams

Udell Armstrong Williams was born July 6, 1921 to Mrs. Katie Howard Armstrong Hunt and Mr. Johnnie "Bower" Armstrong.  Sister Williams was married to Mr.Herbert Williams and had four children Brenda, Glen, Clennon and Patricia.  Her daughter Brenda is St. Paul's current Financial Secretary and also a Missionary.  Sister Williams served as an active member of the Missionary Society at St. Paul.  She died on May 18, 1990.

Beather Youngblood

Sister Beather Broomfield Younblood was married to Brother Johnny Youngblood and was an active member of St. Paul, including membership on the Stewardess Board and Missionary Society.  She was also active in the Sunday School.  She was born January 26, 1917 and died May 18, 1979.

Viola Spencer

Sis Viola Pinkston Spencer was born on November 15, 1908 to Mr. & Mrs. Abraham and Julia Pinkston.  She was married to Eulas Spencer and raised her family at St. Paul.  Sister Spencer was an active member of the Usher Board and was especially known for her outgoing personality.  Sister Spencer died on August 7, 1996.


Julius Pinkston

Brother Julius Pinkston was born on May 7, 1907 to Mr. Abraham Pinkston and his wife Julia Dickson Pinkston.  He died on August 4, 1993.  Brother Pinkston was very active at St. Paul and served for many years as Sunday School Superintendent and Chairman of the Steward Board.  He was married to Sister Eva Kate Lamar Pinkston and they had three sons and two daughters.  They also raised three of their grandchildren.  Brother Pinkston owned and operated a county school bus for many years in Washington County.  Brother Pinkston was remembered for "toning" the bell at St. Paul to announce the arrival of family members on the church yard for funerals.

Johnny Youngblood

Brother Johnny Youngblood, Sr was born on July 19, 1896 to Mr. Ferdinand Youngblood and his wife Francis.  Brother Youngblood married Marion Gonder and raised a family.  After her death in 1934, he married Ms. Beather Broomfield and together they  raised a family.  All of his children were raised at St. Paul and he was a very active member.  He served for many years as Sunday School teacher and also served as a steward and trustee.  He was briefly a member of Trinity CME Church.  Brother Youngblood was the grandson of Julia Lewis Dickson, an orignal trustee of St. Paul.  For a time, Brother Youngblood and his sister Effie Youngblood Chatman were both Sunday School teachers at St. Paul.  Brother Youngblood taught the adult class, while his sister taught the young peoples class.  Brother Youngblood died on January 14, 1986.

Julian Chatman

Brother Julian "Shug" Chatman was a lifelong member of St Paul.

Johnny Chatman

Brother Johnny Chatman was a member of the St. Paul Steward Board and was married to Ms. Tweetie Mae Chatman.  They had one daughter, Mary Lillian who was raised at St. Paul.

George Pinkston

Brother George Pinkston was the son of Sister Marie Lewis Pinkston and was an active member of St. Paul.  Brother Pinkston personally and at his expense cleared the area adjacent to the church and around the Masonic Hall.  Prior to this time the area was severly overgrown and was unusable.  Brother Pinkston's daughters Verneida Pinkston and Patricia Pinkston Nealey are active in the church, including the choir and Sunday School.  Brother Pinkston was married to Mrs. Geneva Durden Pinkston for 54 years.  They also had ten other children Virginia, George Jr., Sarah Mae, Willie B.,  Loise, Theresa, Dennis, Deborah, Tracy and Lisa.
